Former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton conveyed a message to American voters who are upset over having to choose between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the November presidential elections. Clinton said, voters need to “get over” themselves.
Clinton On The Tonight Show
Clinton appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” for an interview. During the interview, Fallon posed a question to Clinton about the critical challenge confronting both Republican nominee Donald Trump and current president Biden as Election Day is drawing near.
Fallon asked Clinton, “What do you say to voters who are upset that those are the two choices?”
Clinton’s Blunt Response
Clinton gave a blunt response to Fallon’s question. She said to the voters, “Get over yourself, those are the two choices.”
Fallon affirmed Clinton’s perspective, saying, “Yeah. I love that!” The crowd clapped in unison.
Clinton Doesn’t Think It Is A Difficult Choice
Clinton shared her perspective on the two presidential candidates, saying, “You know, it’s kind of like, one is old and effective and compassionate, has a heart and really cares about people; and one is old and has been charged with 91 felonies.”
Clinton added, “I don’t understand why this is even a hard choice. Really. I don’t understand it. But we have to go through the election and, hopefully, people will realize what’s at stake because it’s an existential question.”
Clinton And Trump Have Been Rivals
Clinton was Trump’s political opponent during the 2016 presidential elections. She recently criticized Trump for his legal troubles.
Clinton posted on X, “Multiple indictments and half a billion dollars in civil liability later, pretty much the only person who can say they were better off four years ago is Donald Trump.”
Trump’s Legal Troubles
Clinton’s remarks may refer to Trump’s recent legal troubles. Trump’s lawyers stated in a court filing that the former president $464 million bond for his New York civil fraud case.
Trump’s attorneys reported having spent “countless hours negotiating with one of the largest insurance companies in the world” and having approached at least 30 companies to back the bond.
Trump’s Difficulties With Securing A Bond
Trump’s legal team wrote, “The amount of the judgment, with interest, exceeds $464 million, and very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “A bond of the size set by the Democrat Club-controlled Judge, in Corrupt, Racist [New York Attorney General Letitia James’] unlawful Witch Hunt, is unConstitutional, un-American, unprecedented, and practically impossible for ANY Company, including one as successful as mine.”
Whatley’s Comments
It is also possible that Clinton was referring to an interview where the Republican National Committee Chair, Michael Whatley, suggested that the U.S. is currently in a better state than it was during the Trump administration.
Whatley was making the argument that the U.S. is doing even worse under the Biden administration than it was when Trump was in office.
No Labels Couldn’t Lure Any Significant Political Figure
The political organization, No Labels, had drawn the ire of Democrats by asserting that the group’s potential challenge would have served as a net bonus for former President Trump, potentially paving the way for his return to the White House.
In the end, the purportedly centrist group failed to lure anyone of real political standing to run under its banner.
A Glimmer of Hope For Biden
The removal of any potential threat from No Labels has been a glimmer of hope for Biden who is otherwise facing an extremely challenging situation.
According to a recent poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal, Trump is leading the presidential race in six out of seven battleground states that are crucial for determining the election’s result.
Growing Dissatisfaction With Biden
There is also growing discontent among the American public with regards to Biden’s support of Israel during its conflict with Gaza. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 33,000 people have been killed as a result of the conflict.
No Labels failure to secure any significant political figure does not in any way diminish the challenges that Biden is facing from other candidates in the presidential race. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is among the most notable alternate choices for voters.
Clinton’s Remark Has Drawn Flak
While the vast majority of Democrats recognize the significant differences between Trump and Biden, they are doubtful that dissatisfied voters will be open to a message asking them to just “get over” themselves.
Democratic strategist Mark Longabaugh commented that Clinton’s remark shows her inclination towards being “tonally off-sync.”
Not An Effective Way to Win Over Voters
Longabaugh said, I’m not sure that is the most effective way to win disaffected Democrats, younger voters, back to Joe Biden. I’m really not.”
Longabaugh added, “Young people want to be inspired, they don’t want to be lectured to.”
A Better Approach
Longabaugh suggested that voters can be won back with a less patronizing approach that highlights the achievements of the Biden administration.
As Longabaugh puts it, “The way to win them back is not to wag your finger at them but to talk about Biden’s great achievements on climate, about his work to protect a woman’s right to choose, and so on.”
Preaching Doesn’t Help
Grant Reeher, a professor of political science at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, said, “The Democratic Party in general, and Hillary Clinton in particular, have a ‘street rep’ for preaching at, and lecturing, the voters. This doesn’t help that at all.”
Reeher added, “It’s like the ‘basket of deplorables.’ It fits a reputation you have, which does not help you with voters.”
